Barrett Manville Carothers, 85, Lawrence, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1993, at the Brandon Woods Health Care Center in Lawrence. Cremation is planned.
He was born April 10, 1908, in Kirksville, Mo., the son of Manville and Mabel Rose Barrett Carothers. He moved to Lawrence four years ago from Warrenton, Mo.
Mr. Carothers had been the executive vice president for Union Electric Power Co. in St. Louis. He was employed by the power company as a laborer in 1932 and spent his entire career with that organization. He retired in 1971.
He attended Northeast Missouri State College and later received a bachelors degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana.
He was commissioned into the Naval reserve in 1944 and retired in 1946 as a lieutenant commander. Mr. Carothers belonged to the Masonic Lodge in Kirksville, Mo., and received his 32nd degree. He was also a member of the College United Methodist Church in Warrenton, Mo., and to the American Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.
Mr. Carothers married Eva Atteberry in 1934. She died in 1985.
Survivors include a son, James B., Lawrence; two sisters, Carol Bessie Meyers, St. Louis, and Mabel Elizabeth Creamer, Estes Park, Colo.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
No services are planned. The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society, or to the organization of the donor's choice. Memorials may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
