Memorial services for Daniel "Dan'' James McAlister Jr., 54, Lawrence, will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church here.
Mr. McAlister, a Lawrence police officer, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1992, of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
He had lived most of his life in Lawrence and had been a police officer here since Aug. 1, 1970. He held the rank of corporal. Mr. McAlister was in charge of the police evidence room and had received the Eagles Police Officer of the Year award in 1988.
Mr. McAlister was born Dec. 22, 1937, in Kansas City, Mo., to Daniel James McAlister Sr. and Emma Marie Wolfe McAlister. He attended public schools in Lawrence.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He received many awards while on active duty, including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He served for 12 years on active duty and finished his military career with the Kansas National Guard.
Mr. McAlister was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Eagles Lodge.
He was married to Patricia Teegarden on May 22, 1973, in Miami, Okla. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Daniel III, Lawrence; four daughters, Kristi and Anne, of the home, Tina Todd, Lawrence, and Tonya McAlister, Fort Smith, Ark.; a brother, Neual Ernest Housworth, Lawrence; a sister, Dorothy Sarlls, Eudora; and his mother, Marie Housworth, Lawrence.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Daniel James McAlister Jr. Memorial Fund. Contributions can be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, Lawrence. The family will receive friends at the First Presbyterian Church following the memorial service on Sunday.
