When Charles Hawkins, president of the National Federation of Federal Employees Local 45 in Lawrence, heads for Miami this week, he wants to take some help to the victims of Hurricane Andrew.
Hawkins plans to leave Lawrence on Saturday to attend the NFFE convention. And the union is asking federal employees to financially aid federal employees in south Florida who were victims of Andrew.
Homestead Air Force Base, which employs hundreds of federal workers, was nearly destroyed.
So was Dorothy Barrett's house. She's president of Local 1167 in Homestead.
NFFE is working on getting the Federal Employees Education and Assistance fund to provide some emergency assistance to the employees. An NFFE Andrew Fund has been established and will be used exclusively for federal employees in Florida and Louisiana.
Locals residents wishing to contribute can send checks to NFFE Andrew Fund in care of FEEA, 8441 W. Bowles Ave., Littleton, Colo. 80123.
Or, if they prefer the contributions to be hand-delivered, they can send contributions to NFFE Andrew Fund, in care of Charles Hawkins, Haskell Indian Junior College, 155 Indian Ave. No. 1262, Lawrence 66046-4800.
