A man listed on police reports as an Indiana University instructor told officers he was beaten and robbed between 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Friday while taking a stroll near downtown Lawrence.
The 32-year-old Bloomington, Ind., man said an unidentified man confronted him at Ninth and Rhode Island streets and hit him twice in the face, knocking him down. The attacker then straddled the victim as he was lying on the ground and took his wallet.
Lawrence police Sgt. Ron Dalquest said a police report stated that the man had come to Lawrence to visit his girlfriend, who lives in the 1000 block of Connecticut.
Dalquest said the man told officers he had taken a walk from his girlfriend's house to Massachusetts Street and was on his way back when five men started following him. Two of the men were on bicycles.
When he reached Ninth and Rhode Island, Dalquest said, one man rode into him from behind on a bicycle. The victim reported that he turned to face the man, who struck him and took his wallet.
Dalquest said the victim refused medical treatment. Officers were given a description of the attacker but had made no arrests late Saturday.
A police report said the man's wallet contained $100 in cash and several credit cards.
