A Santa Fe steam locomotive on Tuesday will make a return trip through Lawrence after ending its run at the Topeka Railroad Days celebration.
The engine, No. 3751, will depart at 8 a.m. from Topeka and is scheduled to arrive at 10 a.m. in Kansas City. A Santa Fe spokesman said the locomotive probably would pass through Lawrence about 8:45 a.m.
The locomotive chugged through the city today at 10:45 a.m. en route to Topeka from Kansas City. A crowd gathered at the Santa Fe Depot on Seventh Street to watch the locomotive and its coach cars wheel through town. Santa Fe is running the train as part of a company employee recognition program.
The locomotive was the first of Santa Fe's "Superfleet" of modern high-capacity steam locomotives that debuted in 1927. The locomotive was in operation until 1953. It was restored by the San Bernardino, Calif., Railroad Historical Society and is bound for Chicago later next week.
