Shelley Chafin, 22, 1407 Ky., was treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and later released after an accident at 8:05 a.m. Thursday at 15th and Kasold. Police reported that Chafin was northbound when the car she was driving struck the rear of a stopped car driven by Lianne Fridriksson, 38, 3700 Clinton Pkwy. Chafin's car then was struck from the rear by a van driven by Linda Schraad, 37, 1213 Lawrence Ave. Chafin and Schraad both were cited for inattentive driving.
Hazel Lauppe, 57, Rt. 6, was treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and later released after an accident at 6:38 p.m. Wednesday at Sixth and Iowa. Police reported that Lauppe was westbound on Sixth, turning left onto Iowa, when the car she was driving was struck by an eastbound car driven by Freddy Kennedy, 27, 513 Fireside. Lauppe was cited for failing to yield the right of way.
Investigated a false alarm at 7:04 a.m. Thursday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, 325 Maine. A sprinkler flow test accidentally had activated the alarm system.

Criminal case proceedings
Michael Atwell, 27, 630 Mich., on Thursday was convicted of a felony count of abusing a child. Prosecutors filed the charge May 21, alleging Atwell struck his then 18-month-old son on May 20. The child suffered a fractured eye socket, prosecutors claimed. Trial began Wednesday morning and was recessed at 3:30 p.m. for the evening. Jurors reached their verdict about 4 p.m. Thursday after beginning their deliberations about 10:10 a.m. Douglas County District Judge James Paddock scheduled sentencing for 1:30 p.m. Nov. 20. Abuse of a child is a class D felony which carries a minimum prison term of two to five years imprisonment and a maximum of three to 10 years.
