DOWNTOWN WINDOWS PAINTED FOR HALLOWEEN

Local youths turned Lawrence's downtown into a spooky shopping area Saturday as part of the city's 23rd annual Halloween Paint-In.

Fifty-two painters participated in the activity, which was sponsored by the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department and the Breakfast Optimist Club.

The window paintings will be on display through Halloween, said Lee Ice, the city's special events director.

Winners in the contest will be given plaques Nov. 10 at a Breakfast Optimist Club meeting at the Lawrence Holidome, 200 McDonald Dr.

Here are the top finishers in each age division:

Senior high: First place, Adrian Compton, Lawrence High School, window No. 6 at Johnson Furniture, 722 Mass.

Junior high: First place, Linda Bittel, South Junior High, window No. 5, Kring's Interior, 634 Mass.; second place tie, Courtney Compton, Central Junior High, window No. 1, Miller Furniture, 739 Mass., and Ethan Parker, West Junior High, window No. 4, Woolworth's, 913 Mass.

Sixth grade: First place, Martha Clifford and Maggie Beedles, Centennial School, window No. 5, Johnson Furniture; second place, Bethany Compton, Cordley School, window No. 1, Francis Sporting Goods, 731 Mass.; third place tie, Dustin Borland, Cordley School, window No. 5, Johnson's Furniture, and Merrill Evans, Shelby Green and Laura Marshall, Centennial School, window No. 4, Miller Furniture.

Fifth grade: First place tie, David Bireta, Grant School, window No. 4, Kring's Interior, and Roxie Vangemeren, Deerfield School, window No. 4, Everything But Ice, 936 Mass.; third place tie, Rebecca Lysen, Deerfield School, window No. 1, Woolworth's, and Randi Young, Quail Run School, window No. 1, Rent To Own Center, 1029 Mass.
