Highland Community College capitalized on four second-half Haskell fumbles to turn a seven-point halftime lead into a 38-21 victory Saturday night at Haskell Stadium.
"We fumbled a whole lot," Haskell coach Gary Tanner said. "It was a close game and then the next thing I know they're way out in front."
Behind Wade McGee, the nation's leading junior college rusher and scorer, the Indians totaled 244 yards of offense compared to Highland's 284. McGee led all rushers with 103 yards on 26 carries.
"We just couldn't get everyone clicking at the same time," Tanner said. "Our line would block and our receivers wouldn't be there. Then our receivers would run good patterns and our line would let down."
Highland's Yasin Reeder returned the opening kickoff 90 yards, but Haskell evened the score at 7-7 in the second quarter on a one-yard McGee run. Highland led 14-7 at halftime.
HIGHLAND COACH Marty Allen said he was impressed with Haskell.
"This was a lot better Haskell team than I've seen in the past," Allen said. "They have speed and they're a scrappy bunch. Coach Tanner's done a great job getting this program going."
Haskell added two fourth-quarter touchdowns on a 37-yard McGee run and a 13-yard run by quarterback Tim Leatherman.
Haskell falls to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the Interstate Collegiate Conference. On Thursday, the Indians will face Mid-America Nazarene College in Olathe for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
