A 24-year-old Lawrence man on Thursday made his first appearance in Douglas County District Court on a charge accusing him of hit-and-run driving in a 1991 car-bicycle accident in which the former director of the Kansas Union at Kansas University was seriously injured.
At the appearance, District Judge Jean Shepherd scheduled a trial-setting date for Dec. 8 for Michael J. Armstrong, 24, Lawrence, who is charged with a misdemeanor count of leaving the scene of an accident.
Armstrong is accused of driving a car that struck a bicycle ridden by former union director Frank Burge on Nov. 1, 1991, on Iowa Street just north of 15th Street. Burge, 70, suffered a broken thigh and ankle in the accident.
Lawrence police searched for the driver for nearly a year. A break in the case occurred last month when officers received a phone tip describing the car that struck Burge's bicycle. Officers located the car and found damage on it that indicated it was involved in a car-bicycle accident.
