A 28-year-old Kansas City, Mo., man was hospitalized late Saturday after a woman allegedly hit him in the head with a hatchet, Lawrence police reported.
Police Sgt. Don Dalquest said the incident occurred about 11:45 p.m. Saturday at an apartment at 12th and Vermont. Officers were in the process of arresting the woman late Saturday, Dalquest said, adding that the woman probably would be charged with aggravated assault.
The man was taken by Douglas County paramedics to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. LMH could not provide a condition report on the man, but Dalquest said the victim's injuries did not appear to be life threatening. Dalquest was unsure whether the bladed end of the hatchet struck the man.
Dalquest said a woman who lives in the apartment building ran to the police station at the Lawrence-Douglas County Judicial and Law Enforcement Center to report the crime.
He said officers were still trying to sort out details about the incident. Apparently, he said, the man and woman had been drinking, but it was unclear what led to the incident. Also unclear was the tie between the woman who reported the incident, the woman who was taken into custody and the victim.
Dalquest did not know the age or the address of the woman who was arrested.
