An examination of the 46 rape reports filed in Douglas County in 1991 shows that more than half of the victims were in their teens and 20s.
The ages of victims ranged from 4 to 41, although the vast majority of victims 36 were ages 14 to 29. Official Kansas Bureau of Investigation crime statistics include a 10-year-old boy as one of Douglas County's 1991 rape victims.
A total of five victims were age 12 or under, and four of the victims were in their 30s. One woman was in her 40s.
In at least 22 cases, almost half of all cases reported, the victim knew or could identify her assailant. Police records available for review do not always indicate whether a suspect was known to the victim.
A majority of the reported rapes occurred in the last five months of 1991, with 27 occurring from August through December.
In those months, three rapes occurred in August, seven in September, seven in October, six in November and four in December.
Following is a glimpse of the cases reported in September and October, the two months in the fall with the highest number of incidents.
No arrests were made in the 14 cases reported in those two months, according to the KBI.
The information was compiled from police and sheriff's reports with the aid of the KBI, which is the central agency for statistical information about crimes in Kansas.
