A Friday evening fire tore through a vacant North Lawrence house, causing about $20,000 in smoke and fire damage, firefighters reported today.
Capt. Joe Hoelscher, of the Lawrence Fire Department, said firefighters arrived at the house at 220 N. Sixth at 8:26 p.m. and had extinguished the fire by 8:37 p.m.
The fire in the one-story wood-frame house apparently started in a bedroom and spread to the attic and the rest of the house.
"They pulled the hoses through the front door and started fighting the main body of fire," said Hoelscher. "They also had to fight the fire in the attic."
Firefighters were investigating the cause of the fire today.
"A lot of times it's not evident at the time of the fire," Hoelscher said.
