Lawrence High School students Tuesday swept the regional Citizen Bee, taking first, second and third place by demonstrating their knowledge of U.S. history, geography, economics, politics, culture and current events.
Cyrus Mody, an LHS junior, grabbed the top spot by scoring highest in both the oral and written portions of the contest. Britton Palmberg, a senior, took second, and Adam Hefty, also a senior, took third. Joshua Pollack served as alternate for LHS.
About 25 students from nine area high schools participated in the bee, which was held at Olathe North High School.
Mody, Palmberg and Hefty will advance to state competition, scheduled for April 4 in Topeka. The national competition will be June 29 in Washington, D.C., where students will compete for scholarships totaling $48,000.
The Citizen Bee is sponsored by the Close Up Foundation in Washington, D.C.
