To the editor:
Many are shocked and numb to hear of the recent brutal beating and death of a 23-month-old child here in Lawrence. May God forgive this savagery and comfort the soul of that baby, and family left behind. Why did it have to happen? It's so senseless.
The legal system's response is almost as bizarre. Why do politicians call for more surveillance of all families while at the same time making it easier for criminals to escape real punishment? When will this fixation for rehabilitation be replaced by a real concern for the innocent people in society? We live in fear of released killers, brought to justice only to serve a minimal portion of their liberal sentences.
The political hypocrisy is apparent, even in our own elected politicians. When will Sen. Winter develop a consistent position in issues, such as child abuse? A sense of moral outrage over all abuses, including abortion, should be expressed. Our politicians' selected outcry at others' immorality is only so much political posturing for a press that is only too happy to oblige them.
