Lawrence police are searching for at least one man who today reportedly broke into a local restaurant, robbed a man who was sleeping inside and took cash and other items from inside the establishment before escaping.
Police reported that shortly after 3 a.m., a 69-year-old Lawrence man who was sleeping on a couch inside the office of the Plum Tree Restaurant, 2620 Iowa, was awakened by what he believed to be two men breaking into the restaurant.
Police said the 69-year-old told them he was struck in the head and threatened by a man holding a crowbar.
The man with the crowbar tied the 69-year-old Lawrence man with tape, took $250 cash from him, and left him in the office, police reported.
The man was able to free himself from the tape and called the owner of the restaurant, who called police, according to a police spokesman.
No arrests have been made in connection with the incident, police reported.
The victim said he observed just one man during the robbery, but said he believed the man was talking to a second person, the police spokesman said.
Two videocasette recorders, a cellular telephone, a television and a Karaoke machine were among items taken from the restaurant.
The doors of the establishment had been forced open, causing $500 damage, police reported.
