A fire early Sunday morning gutted a house at 717 Mich., causing an estimated $30,000 in damage, Lawrence firefighers reported.
Twenty-one firefighters were called to the one-story, wood-frame house at 6:10 a.m. Sunday after flames were seen coming out of the front.
A male resident who was the only person inside the house at the time was able to get out and was not injured, fire Battalion Chief Jerry Karr said.
However, Karr said one firefighter suffered heat and exhaustion and was evaluated by ambulance personnel at the scene. He was not hospitalized.
Firefighters put the fire out in about 20 minutes, but not before it destroyed much of the house.
"It was completely gutted," Karr said.
The cause of the fire still is under investigation, he said.
