Firing up the barbecue grills, pitching tents, setting up volleyball nets, or just taking it easy all are part of the traditional Fourth of July weekend, but several Lawrence-area communities and lakes have scheduled special activities to celebrate the nation's Independence Day.

McLOUTH Fireworks will light up the sky Saturday starting at dark, about 9:40 p.m. The city of McLouth and the city's recreation commission, Kiwanis Club and fire department are sponsoring the display. They are asking visitors to bring lawn chairs or blankets, but not their own fireworks.

Organizers will ask for donations to defray the costs of the show.

The fireworks will be shot from the hill behind the city's new baseball fields, west of the high school football field.

BASEHOR The Basehor Park Assn. has scheduled an evening of entertainment and activities to celebrate the Fourth of July, starting with a parade at 6 p.m. Saturday. The parade theme will be "Wave the Flag," and the Basehor Chamber of Commerce will provide a cash prize for the best theme entry. Other parade awards will go to the best floats, walking units, horse units, motor vehicles and youth.

A number of games for children and adults will include a dunk tank, miniature golf, bean bag throw, duck pond, mouse race, jail and cake walk. There will be free balloons for children.

The evening's entertainment will feature Pickers 'N' Fiddlers from 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.; John Pfannenstiel, country music, from 7:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.; the city's presentation of the outstanding citizen from 8 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.; Mary Kay Variety Show, 8:15 to 8:45 p.m.; and patriotic music, 8:45 p.m. to 9:15 p.m.

A fireworks show will start in the Basehor-Linwood High School football stadium as soon as the sun sets.

DeSOTO The DeSoto Chamber of Commerce will hold its third annual fireworks display at Miller Memorial Park, 83rd Street and Kaw Avenue in DeSoto, at dusk Saturday. The organization spent $3,000 on fireworks for the show, which is larger than last year's and expected to last 40 to 45 minutes.

The DeSoto Youth Baseball Assn. will sell refreshments at the park during the fireworks display.

PERRY LAKE The Perry Marina, located on the east side of the lake, will hold a boat parade at 6 p.m. Saturday followed by a fireworks show around 9 p.m. or whenever the sun sets. The band Casual Cadillac will perform starting at 8 p.m. through the fireworks display.

The marina store also will offer free gifts throughout the day.

Activities also are scheduled at D.J.'s Rock Creek Marina and Sail Harbor, on the Rock Creek arm of the lake across the bridge from Perry State Park. The annual boat parade will start at 2 p.m. Saturday with prizes for the best decorated vessels. Fireworks will be set off at dark at the sail harbor's rock jetty.

The Cajun Wharf Restaurant at the marina will feature a cajun band from Crowley, La., Lee Benoit and Les Amis. The band will perform from 8 p.m. to midnight Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.

CLINTON LAKE The Clinton Marina will hold a small fireworks display for visitors to the lake. The show will start at 9 p.m. Saturday.
