A rural Meriden teen-ager was killed and another was injured in a one-vehicle accident about 11:45 p.m. Tuesday in western Perry, the Kansas Highway Patrol reported today.
Stephanie A. Ortiz, 15, Meriden, was driving with two passengers in a truck west on U.S. Highway 24 when it went onto the right shoulder and then went out of control as it came back onto the road. The truck rolled at least once before resting on a guardrail, the highway dispatcher said.
Ortiz was pronounced dead at the scene. Leah Clark, 13, Meriden, was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, where she is in critical condition today with a closed head injury, a hospital spokesperson said. The third passenger, David W. Brooks, 26, Topeka, was uninjured. The occupants were not wearing seatbelts, the dispatcher said.
