Negotiators for the city and the Lawrence Police Officers Assn. met separately with a federal mediator this morning to outline their positions on a new work agreement for police.
Buford Thompson, a mediator from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Commission, Kansas City, Mo., met with the six members of the city's negotiating team for about an hour.
The purpose of the session was to give the mediator an understanding of the city's position, said Rod Bremby, assistant city manager and spokesman for the negotiating team.
Thompson was consulting with LPOA officials at press time.
Both sides agreed to call in a mediator to help forge an agreement after contract talks stalled and the two sides declared impasse.
Thompson may bring both groups together for talks later today, Bremby said.
