A 5-year-old Wellsville girl was seriously injured when she was thrown from a van in an accident late Thursday afternoon about 10 miles southeast of Lawrence.

Authorities reported today that Emily Johnson was taken by Life Flight helicopter to the Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan., after the one-vehicle accident.

She was listed in critical condition today at KUMC.

Douglas County sheriff's officers reported that the girl was riding in a van driven by her mother, Patricia K. Johnson, 30, Wellsville, when the accident occurred on Douglas County Road 1061.

Officers reported that Johnson was northbound on 1061 and hit the gearshift, knocking the transmission into "park." The wheels locked, and Johnson lost control.

Sheriff's officers said the van veered off the road and landed on its side in the east ditch. Emily, officers said, was not wearing a safety belt.

Another Johnson child, Andrew, 8, was taken by private vehicle to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. An LMH spokeswoman said this morning that the boy was treated and released.

Mrs. Johnson and Andrew were wearing safety belts, officers said. Another child, Erin Johnson, 2, who was in a car seat, was not hurt. No citations were issued.
