The retired president of Baker University announced today that he will seek a seat on the Douglas County Commission.
Ralph M. Tanner, a Baldwin Republican, said he is collecting signatures on a petition for the 2nd District seat being vacated by Mike Amyx, D-Lawrence. Tanner said he would file his petition June 10 before the noon deadline.
Tanner, 65, served as president of Baker University from 1979 to 1987. After retiring from Baker, he served 2 years as president for the Kansas Independent College Fund.
Tanner grew up in Alabama and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in history from Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Ala. He later received a doctorate in U.S. history and political science from the University of Alabama.
Tanner is the second Republican candidate to circulate petitions for the commission seat. Last week, Paul Shivel, Lawrence, began a petition drive for the office.
Lawrence attorney Ron Schneider also is weighing a run for the 2nd District county commission seat or the newly reapportioned 47th District Kansas House seat held by Joann Flower, R-Oskaloosa. Schneider is a Democrat.
