A man took an undetermined amount of cash from a Lawrence gas station Monday after giving a clerk a note saying he was armed, Lawrence police reported today.
A 22-year-old clerk at Presta Phillips 66, 602 W. Ninth, reported that she handed over cash from the register to the man after he gave her a note saying: "This is a holdup. I have a gun."
The clerk said the man entered the store about 8 p.m., browsed for a short time and brought a few items to the counter. When he reached the counter, she said, he handed her the note. There were no other customers or employees in the store.
Police Lt. Ed Brunt said the clerk told officers she didn't see a gun during the robbery. The man, Brunt said, was last seen running west from the store.
Brunt said the store is conducting an audit to determine how much money was taken.
