In addition to discussing some recently proposed education goals, the Lawrence school board Monday will receive the results of a new writing test that could indicate whether students are achieving one of those goals.
Lawrence School Board President Mary Loveland is scheduled to discuss some recently proposed "exit outcomes," or skills or characteristics that students should have when they graduate from Lawrence High School. An Exit Outcomes Task Force of educators, business people and government officials proposed the outcomes on Jan. 14.
THE BOARD also will hear from Sandra Chapman, the district's director for student outcomes, on the results of a writing assessment given to seventh- and 10th-graders in November.
In the four-day exercise, students developed a rough draft of an essay, revised their works and then prepared a final version. Then, in December, about 25 teachers graded the essays after learning a common grading system.
One of the exit outcomes proposed by the local school panel calls for students to master essential skills in writing.
The board meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. at the district's Service Center, 3705 Clinton Parkway.
IN OTHER business Monday, the board is scheduled to:
Hear from Cordley School Principal Janet Broers on shared decision-making at the school building level.
Hear from Craig Fiegel, the district's director of business and facilities, on progress that has been made in reducing expenditures for the 1991-92 school year. Fiegel also will give a report on the district's building rental fees.
Hear a report from Lawrence School Supt. Dan Neuenswander on educational television and Channel 47, the channel that Sunflower Cablevision has provided for district use. Board members at their last meeting said they wanted to develop a policy on the channel's use.
Hear a proposal from World GEO Solutions regarding student transportation.
Consider purchase contracts for food and non-food supplies and printing paper.
Appoint a board negotiating team for teacher negotiations, which will begin Friday.
