Del Shankel, executive vice chancellor for the Kansas University Lawrence campus, recently represented KU at a high-level meeting seeking changes in a Department of Defense policy.
Shankel and representatives of six other universities met at the Pentagon with Department of Defense officials last Friday to seek a change in the policy restricting admission of gays and lesbians to the military.
Other institutions represented included California State University-Sacramento, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Massachusetts-Boston, the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, Duke University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Officials from two national higher education associations also attended.
"I believe the meeting was positive and productive, and I believe that if the higher education community can continue to work together on these issues, we will eventually see some progress," Shankel said.
Shankel also told Department of Defense representatives that KU faculty and students were concerned about resolving the conflicting policies and that the issue had been discussed at length by governance organizations.
