An electrical short was blamed for an early morning blaze that caused an estimated $35,000 damage to a North Lawrence video store, Fire Chief Jim McSwain said.
No one was injured in the fire.
McSwain said this morning that there was no evidence anyone was in the building at 2:36 a.m., when the fire was reported at Vipers Video, 701 Locust.
McSwain said that firefighters were en route to the store when a Lawrence police officer reported that he could see the fire seven blocks from the business.
The short occurred on the first floor of the building in the south wall, McSwain said.
Lawrence Fire Marshal Rich Barr said that two members of the Fire Investigation Bureau were at the fire scene this morning. The bureau is an investigation unit comprised of Lawrence firefighters.
Although the building is still standing, Barr said it was severely damaged, and firefighters would have to clear a lot of the debris before they could concentrate on the investigation.
