— Lawrence High's girls basketball team raced to a 17-0 lead after one quarter in a one-sided 83-28 win over Kansas City Harmon here Tuesday night.

"Our fullcourt press caused them trouble in the first quarter," LHS coach Gary Hammer said. "We had a lot of steals. They had trouble handling the ball under pressure."

The Lions, 7-1, took off the press in the second quarter, went to a zone, yet expanded the lead to 41-8 by halftime.

"We pressed the first quarter and a half didn't press the rest of game," said Hammer. "After the game I told their coach `Sorry about the score.' He said `You have nothing to be sorry about. You have a great team.' We outmatched them. We had better athletes."

JENNIFER TRAPP led the Lions with 14 points, followed by Jill Oelschlager with 13, Becky Zinn 12 and Megan Kampschroeder 10. Oelschlager had three steals.

"The girls had a lot of fun. Everybody played a lot of minutes. There was such a big difference in the score," Hammer said.

"I thought Jill played real well. She shot well," he said. "Lindsay (Lawton) and Jill were able to get some steals and feed one another for layups. It was nice to see people come off the bench and do well. It was Becky's highest scoring game, Julie Butler's highest scoring game (nine points)."

The Lions will entertain Leavenworth at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
