The state adjutant general's office hopes to reorganize the Kansas Army National Guard's distribution across the state in time for annual training in June, a adjutant general's public relations officer said.
Joy Moser said after learning Friday that the 1st Battalion of the 137th Infantry, based in Wichita, is being eliminated, the office started planning to reassign soldiers to other units and possibly relocate some units, she said. Moser said the U.S. National Guard has set September as the deadline for reorganizing the state Guard.
"No one knows at this time how it will affect Lawrence," Moser said.
However, she added that one option would be to split the 137th Infantry Division in Lawrence to create a new unit elsewhere. Some people from other areas might join the Lawrence unit, and some presently assigned to the Lawrence division could be reassigned.
The office will study demographics and skills of the individual soldiers when reorganizing the forces, she said.
