— Stacy Williams scored 18 points and Ericka Fields chipped in 17 as Missouri edged Kansas, the Big Eight's top-ranked women's basketball team, 57-56, on Wednesday night at the Hearnes Center.

Kansas is ranked No. 24 in this week's Associated Press poll, but the Jayhawks, now 11-3, have now lost three of their last four games after winning their first 10.

Kansas led 33-29 at halftime in the conference opener for both teams, but Missouri recaptured the lead during an 11-2 run sparked by an Amy Fordham layup, making it 38-37. Soon after, Kansas went on a 10-4 run, when a 3-pointer by Shannon Kite and a short jumper by Truitt gave the Jayhawks a 2-point lead with four minutes left.

The score was tied 53-53 with 1:42 remaining, when Fields was fouled and hit both free throws to give Missouri, now 10-4, a two-point lead.

Kansas' Terrilyn Johnson, who wound up with a game-high 17 rebounds, had a chance to tie the game again when she was fouled, but she missed the first shot and Missouri's Carol Coykendall grabbed the rebound.

Fields scored again, putting Missouri up 57-53. KU's Stacy Truitt potted a 3-pointer with one second on the clock.

Truitt, Angela Aycock and Marthea McCloud each had 10 points for the Jayhawks.

Kansas made only 9 of 28 shots in the second half and shot just 35.1 percent (20 of 57) overall. Missouri shot 43.4 percent (23 of 53).

Kansas, which hasn't had a home game this month, will return to Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon to meet Colorado. Tipoff is 2 p.m.

The Jayhawks will also be home next Wednesday against Iowa State.
