A 38-year-old Lawrence woman was listed in serious condition this morning after she was stabbed in the throat with a ball-point pen Sunday during a service at Lawrence Pentecostal Bible Church, 1845 Tenn.
Police arrested a 20-year-old Lawrence woman about noon Sunday, about 15 minutes after the stabbing.
Lawrence police provided the following account of the incident.
The two women were sharing a Bible during the church service when the suspect told the victim she needed to sit down.
The victim remained on her feet, but the suspect sat down. Shortly after the suspect sat down, the victim said she felt a sharp pain in her throat. The suspect then left the pew near the front of the church where she and the victim had been sitting.
The 38-year-old woman was taken to the Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan., where she is being treated for the stab wound.
Lawrence police reported that the two women lived in the same neighborhood and had known each other since Dec. 22.
Police Sgt. Mark Warren said this morning that police "had no clear motive" for the stabbing.
The suspect in being held without bond in the Douglas County Jail and was scheduled to make her first court appearance this afternoon.
