A Berryton man died early this morning after his pickup truck went off the road east of Lawrence, marking the first fatal accident of 1992 in Douglas County.
Kent E. Cordwell, 21, was pronounced dead at 2:23 a.m. today at Topeka's St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center where he was taken after the accident about 12:30 a.m. today 12 miles west of Lawrence, near Big Springs.
Douglas County sheriff's officers reported that Cordwell was driving a pickup west on Douglas County Road 1900N when he apparently drove off the dirt road and into a ravine. The lone passenger in the car, Jon A. Barngrover, 20, Topeka, went to a local residence to call for help. He was treated at St. Francis and later released.
Barngrover gave officers no details about the accident, reports said.
Sheriff's officers said they did not know where the men had been, but preliminary reports indicate they were heading home.
Sheriff Loren Anderson said this morning that neither man was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
Anderson said it wasn't clear whether alcohol played a role in the accident.
