— McLouth topped Oskaloosa in each of their four basketball meetings last season. But now, under new coach Kevin Bordewick, Oskie is halfway to returning the favor.

The Bears leaped to a 10-point first quarter lead and downed the Bulldogs, 63-50, here Friday night.

"We hustled the hardest we've hustled in long time, especially in that first quarter," said Oskaloosa junior James Turner who hit four three-pointers and led the Bears with 16 points. Brian White and Brian Bassett added 14 and 10 respectively.

"Their coach has done a fine job with them," McLouth coach Tom Pierce said. "Their attitude seems so much better than last year. I'm really impressed with them."

PIERCE'S TEAM fell to the Bears, 57-46, a month ago. In that game, the Bears took an early lead just like they did on Friday.

Two baskets by White and a three-pointer by Turner produced a 7-0 Oskie lead before the contest was even a minute old.

The Bears run-and-gun play helped them to a 15-4 edge, and forced Pierce to call time to settle his inexperienced team down.

"We don't have any starters back from last year so its taking awhile to learn patience," Pierce said. "Right now, we are trying to force things too much."

Pierce's chat seemed to work, but the Bulldogs still trailed, 22-12, at the end of the first quarter.

"That first quarter basically won the game for us," Bordewick said. "We had our press working, we were really hustling and we didn't lose control."

Two treys by senior Jeff Monahan helped McLouth inch back in the second quarter, and the 'Dogs trailed by only three at halftime.

MCLOUTH KNOTTED the game at 34 with 6:35 remaining in the third quarter, but that was as close as the 'Dogs came.

McLouth was more accurate from the field, out-shooting the Bears 42 to 38 percent, but turnovers limited the Bulldogs to 45 shots, while the Bears launched 66.

Joe Barton, Justin Schwinn, Scott Gaskell and Brian Bowen all had 11 points for McLouth.

Oskaloosa was winless (0-19) last season, but now has improved to 3-5. On Tuesday, Oskaloosa hits the road to play Valley Falls and McLouth, now 1-7, hosts Eudora.
