Construction of the new Wal-Mart in Lawrence is scheduled to begin this spring, and the store is expected to open in the fall, the company said.
Wal-Mart plans to relocate its 86,396-square-foot store at 2727 Iowa to the new store, which will be built on the 9.8-acre site at 33rd and Iowa. The new store will contain 121,267 square feet.
The company is declining to release an estimate of construction costs. The expansion will create about 30 additional jobs, a company statement said.
The Wal-Mart statement said the existing store will be available for lease after the new store opens.
Sandy Brummett, a spokesman at Wal-Mart's headquarters in Bentonville, Ark., said the company plans to retain the building as rental property rather than find a buyer. So far, no tenant has been found, she said.
Wal-Mart is a national discount retail chain that operates 1,699 stores in 41 states. The company expects to open 150 new stores this year, including relocations such as the new Lawrence store, Brummett said.
