Douglas County Commission Chairman Louie McElhaney said he plans to seek a second term as county commissioner.
McElhaney, 56, is a Republican representing the county's 3rd District, which mainly comprises western Lawrence, western Douglas County and Wakarusa Township. He was elected to the commission in 1988 and became commission chairman last year.
"The biggest thing I am proud of is serving the county and working to keep its budget down," McElhaney said.
He added that he would like to serve another year as commission chairman because of his work on getting the regional juvenile detention center built. However, McElhaney said he would not mind if the chairmanship went to another commissioner.
