According to Lawrence Police reports, a 16-year-old Lawrence youth was headed north on Massachusetts when, either because he fell asleep or became faint, he drove onto the curb at Ninth and Massachusetts. A small concrete barrier was knocked over and one side of the flower box was severely cracked.
A 32-year-old Oskaloosa woman was reported in serious condition this morning after a car accident that occurred around 10:30 p.m. Friday near Olive and Lucy streets in McLouth.
A Jefferson County Sheriff's spokesman said that Kimberlee K. Back was a passenger in a car that struck a tree. The driver of the car, a 17-year-old McLouth youth, apparently lost control of the vehicle and struck the tree after trying to elude a police officer. A low-speed chase covering several blocks ensued after the driver refused to pull over for the police officer, the sheriff's spokesman said.
The driver has been charged with reckless driving and eluding a police officer.
Back was taken to Jefferson County Memorial Hospital and then to St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Topeka, where she was listed in serious condition this morning. A hospital spokesman said Back might undergo surgery for abdominal injuries today.
