EUDORA BLASTS BEARS

— The Oskaloosa High scoreboard doesn't make noise, but even if it did, the tick-tock of the clock likely would have been drowned out by the ticky-tack of the fouls committed in the Bears' gym.

Oskie and Eudora combined for 49 fouls in the Cardinals' 72-46 basketball victory on Friday night.

"There were a lot of fouls," said Jamy Hickman, Eudora's 6-3 senior center who scored a game-high and season-best 16 points. "I didn't agree with some of the calls, but there's nothing you can do. You just go on a play the game. It was pretty even."

While the number of fouls was pretty even -- Eudora was whistled for 24 infractions, Oskaloosa for 25 -- the resultant free-throw shooting wasn't. The Cardinals cashed 19 of 29 charities, the Bears six of 21.

"THE BIG difference," Oskie coach Kevin Boardwick said, "was they hit their free throws and we didn't."

The Cards couldn't hit much of anything early as the Bears jumped to a 10-5 lead. Then the Cardinals, helped by a technical foul on Oskie's James Turner, went on a 13-2 run to close the first period.

Eudora led 38-24 at intermission, then Hickman scored 12 points in the Cards' 25-12 third quarter that put the game out of reach.

"We started off really cold," Hickman said. "We couldn't hit anything. Then we turned it on."

They also turned it up defensively. Eudora's full-court press and tenacious defense forced 27 Oskaloosa turnovers. The Cards turned it over 17 times.

"We talked about keeping the pressure on all the time," Eudora coach Terry Zerr said. "We're getting better at it. Each game we're a little better."

ADAM GABRIEL scored 10 points and was the only other Cardinal in double figures. In all, 11 Eudora players scored.

"That's the way I like it," Zerr said. "I like to play like KU. We put a lot of people in, and a lot of people scored."

Jeff Farmer paced the Bears with 14 points, and Aric Craven added 10.

"This was pretty bad," Oskie's Boardwick said. "I didn't think Eudora would be that hot. I thought we could play with them. They hit an unbelievable percentage. In the second half, we had hands in their faces and they still made the shots.

On Tuesday, the Bears (2-4) will play at home against Pleasant Ridge. The Cardinals (4-3) will travel to Rossville.
