A 41-year-old Lawrence man was arrested this morning on charges stemming from the rape early Wednesday of a 20-year-old Topeka woman in the parking lot of a Lawrence apartment complex.
The man was booked into the Douglas County Jail at 11:55 a.m. and was being held without bond early this afternoon.
Lawrence police gave the following account of the incident.
The woman had been driving around town late Tuesday and early Wednesday, with different people at different times, including the suspect. A police spokesman said the man and the woman were acquaintances.
The woman apparently had been taking friends and acquaintances to parties and get-togethers at several Lawrence residences.
Shortly before 4 a.m., the woman dropped off the suspect along with several other passengers at the parking lot of an apartment complex on W. 24th Street.
The woman had been waiting in her car for several minutes for the passengers to return, but only the suspect came back.
The suspect got into the car and asked the woman whether she would have sex with him. She refused and he forced her to have sexual intercourse with him.
The woman then returned to her home in Topeka, where she went to St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center for an examination. Hospital employees notified Lawrence police.
Lawrence police did not release any additional information this morning about where the man was arrested.
