Scheduling conflicts, aggravated by the destruction of Hoch Auditorium, will prevent Kansas University from hosting American Legion Boys State this summer, KU officials said.
Boys State, a leadership program for high school juniors, will convene at Kansas State University in Manhattan. The conference will be June 7-13.
A late schedule change requested by American Legion officials and destruction of Hoch by fire in June combined to make it impossible for KU to host Boys State, said Ken Stoner, director of student housing at KU.
"We tried to accommodate it, but couldn't," Stoner said. "I am personally disappointed. I attended the first Boys State held on the KU campus in 1963."
He said there was a chance that American Legion officials would decide to bring Boys State back to KU next year.
KU still intends to host Girls State from May 31 to June 6, he said.
Boys State and Girls State are sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary.
