Two Lawrence men were arrested early today after police allegedly saw them making crack cocaine at the duplex apartment where one of the men lives.
The men, ages 35 and 36, were arrested on charges of possessing a controlled substance after officers, who had gone to the duplex about 2:45 a.m. today to investigate reports of a woman screaming, allegedly saw them making crack.
Lawrence police Sgt. Mark Warren said that after officers arrived at the duplex, in the 800 block of Louisiana, a woman in one apartment told them the problem was in the other apartment.
When officers checked the other apartment, Warren said, they found an unspecified quantity of white, powdery substance in the kitchen. Warren said the officers had seen the two men working over the stove, and police found a pot that contained residue from the white powder.
He said it appeared the men were working on "a process you'd go through to turn powdered cocaine into crack."
The men were being held without bond today in the Douglas County Jail. Formal charges have not been filed.
