Football games aren't canceled by rain. Football scrimmages are another matter.
Wet grounds, and, ostensibly, the threat of damage to the Haskell Stadium field, forced the postponement of the annual Lawrence High fall sports jamboree.
The jamboree will be tonight instead.
"We rent the facilities from (Haskell)," LHS assistant football coach Ron Commons said. "It's too early in the year to be tearing up the facilities for a scrimmage."
The postponement won't have much effect on the team's practice schedule, Commons said, but it's proximity to the Lions' regular-season opener does concern the coaches.
LHS will begin play next Friday at Olathe East.
"We're concerned about having the jamboree on a Friday," Commons said. "Then you only have a week for anybody to heal up. That's why we moved it to Wednesday, to get two extra days to heal. Obviously, Thursday is better than Friday."
The jamboree is scheduled to begin at 6:30 tonight with a 45-minute sophomore football scrimmage. A band performance is slated from 7:15-7:30.
The varsity will scrimmage from 7:30-8:30 and from 8:45-9:45. A 15-minute cross country exhibition is scheduled between the two varsity scrimmages.
