Law enforcement report
Someone caused $1,300 in damage and uprooted and stole a tree valued at $25 between Saturday and Tuesday at the Lawrence Indian Center, 1423 Haskell. Among the items damaged were several windows, lattice and plants. Police have identified no suspects.
Officers are investigating a report that a 3-year-old girl was fondled between February and June 15 by the teen-age son of her baby sitter at the sitter's home in eastern Lawrence. Police said the woman made the accusation after learning officers were investigating another report that the boy fondled a 4-year-old girl in July.
Criminal case proceedings
Jeannie M. Newmoon, 39, no address listed, was found guilty Tuesday of a felony count of aggravated battery alleging she struck a man in the head on May 16 with the blunt end of a roofing hammer. A 12-member jury returned its verdict early Tuesday afternoon, ending a trial that began Monday morning. Douglas County District Judge Ralph M. King Jr. set sentencing for Oct. 1.
Joshua Shores, 20, address listed as 1011 Ellsworth Hall at Kansas University, recently pleaded no contest and was found guilty of misdemeanor counts of sexual battery and criminal trespassing. Shores was charged April 21 with a felony count of aggravated sexual battery after a 19-year-old woman accused him of walking into her room at Ellsworth Hall and trying to remove her clothes. Sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 1.
