Overland Park Lawrence High baseball coach Lynn Harrod didn't lose his sense of humor, but the Lions lost both games of a doubleheader to Shawnee Mission West on Monday at the 3&2 Complex.
"One bright spot is our record is better than the Royals," Harrod said after 8-7 and 5-3 setbacks.
The losses dropped LHS to 4-8 on the season.
The 11-inning first game was tough for Harrod to take, though. LHS led, 6-5, entering the bottom of the seventh and 7-6 entering the bottom of the 10th. SM West rapped two-out singles both times to tie.
"We had that game twice," Harrod said. "It happens to a team that can't find itself. I feel sorry for the team we're going to erupt against. Once we go, it's gonna be a freight train."
LHS scored three runs in the sixth inning of the opener to go up, 6-5. Big hits in the inning included a triple by Mark Edmonds and RBI single by Fred Mohl. Brad Harker went 2-for-2 with a RBI walk.
LHS led, 2-1, in the third inning of the nightcap, but SM West plated three in the bottom of the third.
Lawrence had just six hits in the second game.
"I thought we hung tough in the second game," Harrod said. "It was really hard to lose that first game. To lose in 11, the guys played their hearts out."
The Lions will face Leavenworth in a doubleheader at 4:15 p.m. Thursday at Ice Field.
