TUCSON, ARIZ. — Ron Oelschlager, a Lawrence High graduate who plays baseball for Arizona University, was listed in fair condition in the critical care unit of St. Mary's Hospital after being injured during practice Tuesday.
Oelschlager, a sophomore, underwent emergency surgery Tuesday night to remove his spleen, part of his pancreas and a blood clot in his left renal artery.
He suffered eight broken ribs and internal injuries when he collided with teammate Richard Lemons while going for a fly ball. Lemons' knee struck Oelschlager in the chest.
Arizona baseball trainer Bruce Tolliver said Oelschlager will miss the rest of the season, but should be able to play again next year. Oelschlager started 31 of 39 games for the Wildcats this season and is batting .225 with two home runs and 12 runs batted in.
