Kansas University has completed plans for this year's 120th commencement with tradition in mind.
"I think the commencement committee, in general, wants to keep the ceremony as traditional as possible," said Susan Elkins, coordinator for the KU Information Center who also serves on the 34-member 1992 Commencement Committee.
Commencement, she said, would be conducted basically the same as it was a year ago.
"It's really not going to be any different from last year," Elkins said.
The plans are outlined in brochures placed at various locations around campus.
This year's commencement will be at 2:30 p.m. May 17.
It will begin with an afternoon procession of faculty, graduates, and dignitaries beginning on Memorial Drive. The procession will pass through the Campanile and move into Memorial Stadium.
Graduates will sit on both sides of the stadium in rows 1 through 10 of sections eight through 15 and 36 through 43. The speakers platform faces south.
IF IT IS raining heavily the morning of commencement, an announcement will be made at 1 p.m. to postpone the ceremony. Two blasts of the university whistle at that time will indicate postponement and an announcement will be made through the KU Information Center (864-3506) and broadcast media outlets.
At 4 p.m. the location of the postponed ceremony will be announced through the media outlets and the Information Center. Two blasts of the university whistle at that time will indicate an indoor ceremony at Allen Fieldhouse.
If the weather had cleared enough for an outdoor ceremony, graduates will assemble along Memorial Drive at 5 p.m. for a 5:30 p.m. procession into Memorial Stadium.
If it is still raining heavily, the ceremony will be moved indoors to Allen Fieldhouse. Graduates will be split into two groups. One group will assemble at 5 p.m.; the other at 7 p.m.
"SINCE we have plans in place, it won't rain," Elkins quipped. "If we didn't have any rain plans, it would rain."
