Proposed cuts in the National Guard and military reserves won't silence Paul Gray and his Army Reserve Band.
Gray, Lawrence, is commanding officer and bandmaster of the 312th Army Reserve Band.
The Defense Department on Thursday released a list targeting more than 140,000 National Guard and reserve jobs to be eliminated. Several units in Kansas were on the list. The 312th was not targeted.
"My understanding is that our band will not be affected at all," Gray said.
There are 60 reservists in Gray's band, which last played during August in Lawrence.
The band also performed throughout Kansas and Nebraska to welcome reservists who participated in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm.
"It's hard to put a price tag on the impact of a military band playing military music in those times," Gray said.
