A man who law enforcement authorities believe may have robbed the Wellsville Bank and two other businesses in the last month was in critical condition Friday night at Humana Hospital in Overland Park after being injured in an automobile accident.
A spokesman for the FBI in Kansas City, Mo. said the man was in the hospital's intensive care unit Friday night. The FBI did not have a condition on the man as of this morning, the spokesman said.
The 38-year-old Olathe man, whose name has not been released, suffered serious injuries in a one-car accident early Friday on Interstate 35 in Lenexa, officials said.
The man has not been arrested, the FBI spokesman said.
He is a suspect in the Thursday robbery of a drugstore in Louisburg and the Aug. 5 robbery at the bank in Drexel, Mo.
The Wellsville bank robberies occurred Wednesday and on Aug. 23.
In the first incident, a man wielding a sawed-off shotgun demanded cash. In the second Wellsville bank robbery, a weapon was not revealed.
Officials in the Franklin County sheriff's department and Kansas Bureau of Investigation had no information about the suspect early today.
