Lecompton Lecompton city officials took a stand this week against state redistricting efforts by a legislative subcommittee, said Susie Hackathorn, city clerk.
The Lecompton City Council adopted a resolution Monday urging the state Task Force on Reapportionment not to move Lecompton from the 45th Kansas House District to the 47th District with Jefferson County, said Hackathorn.
The resolution maintained that the town's longstanding governmental and economic ties to Douglas County, as well as the natural boundary of the Kansas River, should be considered when redrawing congressional districts, she said.
In other business at the meeting, the council:
Approved a two-year extension on a contract with Lecompton Rural Refuse.
Agreed to conduct a survey of Lecompton residents to measure interest in a future citywide recycling program. Hackathorn said she probably will include the recycling question in an upcoming city water bill.
Amended a contract with Douglas County Rural Water District No. 3, modifying water rates. Beginning in January, the city will go from paying $2.20 per thousand gallons to a flat monthly fee of $560 plus a fee for each thousand gallons that is 40 cents below the lowest rate charged of regular customers. The new rates won't affect the city's water customers, Hackathorn said.
