Local Veterans Day activities will be held at 11:11 a.m. Monday at the Alford Clark Post No. 852 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 138 Ala.
The activities will be sponsored by United Veterans Organizations of Douglas County, which includes representatives from the VFW, Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 of the American Legion, Chapter 22 of the Disabled American Veterans, Vietnam Veterans of America, Forgotten Brothers, Prairie Fire and POWs and MIAs.
Speakers at the ceremony include J.D. King, Lawrence, a prisoner of war in World War II; Wilda Leonard, Lawrence, a former Wave; Janice Ott, reservist and Persian Gulf War veteran; and John Solbach, Lawrence representative to the Kansas House.
Monday's program will consist of:
Advancement of the colors, VFW.
Pledge of allegiance, Mike Miller, local VFW commander.
Invocation, Erving Gunn, chaplain, VFW and DAV.
Welcoming remarks, Bob Walters, Lawrence mayor.
Introductions followed by speakers.
Benediction, John Studdard, American Legion chaplain.
Salute to deceased veterans, VFW and American Legion firing squads.
In addition to local events, a ceremony honoring deceased veterans will be held Monday at the Kansas National Guard Armory in Olathe by the American Legion 2nd District organization, which includes Lawrence.
The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. at the armory, 1601 W. 56 Highway, Olathe.
Gov. Joan Finney is among those invited to speak at the ceremony.
