A 21-year-old Lawrence man who was arrested early this morning on a charge of possession of marijuana is scheduled to make his first court appearance at 11 a.m. June 5 in Douglas County District Court. The man, who was released from Douglas County Jail on $500 bond, also will appear at 7:45 a.m. June 5 on a petit larceny charge. Police were unable to provide additional information this morning on what led to the arrest.
A 24-year-old Lawrence man who was arrested Friday night on a charge of possession of stolen property was in Douglas County Jail this morning on $1,000 bond.
Ron Bruce, Lawrence, was being evaluated this morning in the emergency room at the Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., for possible spinal injuries suffered early this morning in a car-motorcycle collision at the intersection of 23rd and Lousiana streets. Lawrence police said the accident occurred at about 2 a.m. when Bruce's motorcycle was struck from the rear as he was stopped at the stoplight at the intersection. Bruce first was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and then was transferred by ambulance to KUMC. Police said the driver of the car fled from the scene on foot. Police said they have the car and were trying to locate the driver this morning. Other information about the accident was unavailable this morning.
Were called to extinguish a car fire at 4:36 p.m. Friday at 2300 La. Firefighters extinguished the fire, which caused $1,000 in damage. It was caused by a carburetor backfire.
Were called to extinguish a car fire at 9:45 p.m. Friday at 1900 W. 31st. Firefighters said a carburetor backfire started the blaze, which caused about $500 in damage.
Criminal case proceedings
William G. Wilson, 21, 1614 W. Ninth, was sentenced Friday to one to five years imprisonment but then was granted a five-year probation term on a felony count of forgery. Wilson was charged Jan. 7 with the forgery count, another felony count of forgery and a misdemeanor count of theft alleging that he took 17 Bucky's restaurant payroll checks on Jan. 3 and forged two of them the next day. He pleaded guilty April 9 to one of the forgery charges.
Rodney G. Blevins, 25, 101 N. Mich., was sentenced Thursday to one to five years imprisonment on a felony count of theft and a year in jail on a count of driving while intoxicated. Blevins pleaded no contest May 3 and was found guilty of the charges, which were filed against him Feb. 12 along with charges of driving without a driver's license and leaving the scene of an accident. The charges alleged that Blevins stole and wrecked a car belonging to a local woman on Feb. 11.
