— Santa Clara's three-point shooting here Friday night prevented Kansas' basketball team from reaching the National Women's Invitational Tournament finals.

The Broncos hit six three-pointers in the final three minutes in defeating KU, 58-57, in an NWIT semifinal game.

Santa Clara's Julie Lienert hit six three-pointers in the contest to tie a NWIT record. She finished with 22 points.

"Lienert definately hurt us. We didn't do a good job defending her," Kansas coach Marian Washington said.

The Jayhawks led 19-18 with 6:35 remaining in the first half when they went on a 12-3 run to lead 31-21 at halftime.

But Santa Clara made eight of 10 three-point attempts in the second half, including Lienert's three-pointer that capped a 23-5 run to put the Broncos ahead 55-50 with 4:20 to go.

Misti Chennault's three-point shot brought Kansas within one, 58-57, with 30 seconds remaining, but the Jayhawks couldn't get the ball back as Santa Clara ran out the clock.

Lisa Tate led KU with 18 points, eight rebounds and nine blocked shots. Tate now has 82 blocks on the season, which is a KU women's record.

"This is definately one of her best games of the season," said Washington.

KU, now 19-13, will face Houston tonight at 6 p.m. in the NWIT third-place game. Santa Clara, which improved to 27-3, will face Indiana (18-12), for the NWIT chamionship following the consolation game. KANSAS (57)
