— Baker's John Smith has been named Heart of America Conference player of the year in basketball for the second straight season.

The 6-6 senior from Shawnee Mission East has led the Wildcats in scoring and rebounding every season since his sophomore year. In four seasons, Smith has scored a school record 2,460 points and was the first Baker basketball player to have his jersey retired.

During the 1990-91 season, he averaged 22.8 points and 6.7 rebounds a game.

Baker's Craig Lawson, a 6-8 senior from Raytown, Mo., earned honorable mention on the all-league team.
